Underground Storage Tanks (BUSTR)

Learn how BUSTR oversees underground storage tanks and ensures their safe operation across Ohio.

Bureau of Underground Storage Tank Regulations (BUSTR)

BUSTR oversees the safe operation of underground storage tanks (USTs) that contain petroleum and other hazardous substances. We investigate and direct cleanup of suspected or confirmed releases to protect public health and Ohio's environment.

  • Conduct inspections of UST systems
  • Educate tank owners and operators
  • Enforce Ohio laws and follow federal regulations

Note: Some tanks are not regulated by BUSTR. Contact your local fire department for information about residential heating oil tanks, propane tanks, or aboveground tanks that hold flammable or combustible liquids. If your fire department cannot assist, contact the Code Enforcement Bureau.

Note: BUSTR and the Petroleum Underground Storage Tank Release Compensation Board (PUSTRCB) are separate. PUSTRCB handles reimbursement for cleanups. Call PUSTRCB at (614) 752-8963 or visit petroboard.org.
